Technical Feature: Five Minutes With Roger Gallington

Roger Gallington

"American Challenge will apply modern stability augmentation methods and other technology to design and build a vehicle that can exceed the existing water speed record by a very significant margin.   Our team combines the business and technical skills necessary to achieve this success."

Dr. Roger Gallington
Design Engineer
American Challenge, Inc.

Question:   Tell us a little about your engineering experience?

Gallington:   I recently retired from a 40-year career in Aeronautical Engineering and project management.   The specific experience most relevant to American Challenge is a major technical evaluation of giant Soviet ground effect vehicles which skimmed at high speed just above the water surface.   This study required the combination of Aerodynamics and Hydrodynamics.

Question:   What persuaded you to join American Challenge?

Gallington:   The technical challenges, Russ Wick's enthusiasm, and his apparent team building skills are the main things that attracted me to American Challenge.   Because the record is more than 25 years old and because there are now many robust solutions to the more obvious problems, I'm convinced that someone will break this record soon.   It might as well be our US team.

Question:   What do you consider your most important contribution to the project?

Gallington:   Requirements and specification development, preliminary design based on fundamental physics, and development test planning are where I expect to contribute.   I'm pleased to be working with other talented members of the team with complementary skills and experience.

Question:   Is there anything else you would like to add?

Gallington:   Our essential technical challenge is designing and building a stable craft that is safe while skimming across the water surface at speeds which can produce fluctuating local pressures of over 2,000 pounds per square inch.   We must work within the physical laws describing the behavior of air, water, and vehicles, to achieve our goal of much greater speed.
